3D Sucks…and Always Will!

So my wife and I try to take a night sometime throughout the week, usually on the weekend, and have a date night. This past week we went to our favorite pizza place for dinner, Coldstone Creamery for dessert, and went to a movie theater to see Valerian for the finale. However, when we arrived at the theater I realized that I must have not payed close enough attention to the showtimes because the 7:30pm showtime was a 3D showing. Needless to say, we didn’t see Valerian that night.

You are probably wondering, why didn’t you just watch the film in 3D? Is it because of the extra money? Yes and no. Yes, I don’t want to pay the extra money, but it’s really not about the extra couple of dollars…it’s about not wanting to pay the extra money for an inferior product.

NOW you’re probably wondering how 3D is an inferior product? Logically you may think that 3D is a plus and would lead to a more enjoyable experience. But you’d be wrong and here’s why.

If the film isn’t shot specifically for 3D, the film is too dark. 3D is projecting two different images and therefore there’s not enough light to go around. To make matters worse, those god-awful glasses are darkly coated. Hence a darker film.

If that’s not bad enough, the main reason, and the reason many people get headaches, 3D is a waste of money and will never get better is an issue with how your brain focuses on a fixed image. When somebody goes to see a film in 2D, they sit down and are focusing on an image that is in a fixed location. It never moves from that location. However, when somebody sees a film in 3D the image moves from that fixed location. They are asking their brain to focus on an image that is, let’s just say, 50 feet in front of them and also an image 10 feet in front of them. Your brain is powerful thing, so it can accomplish it, but at a cost of paying attention to certain things like plot details.

Don’t just take my word for it, here’s Academy Award winning film editor Walter Murch discussing the topic in a letter to Roger Ebert in 2011.

“The biggest problem with 3D, though, is the “convergence/focus” issue. A couple of the other issues — darkness and “smallness” — are at least theoretically solvable. But the deeper problem is that the audience must focus their eyes at the plane of the screen — say it is 80 feet away. This is constant no matter what. But their eyes must converge at perhaps 10 feet away, then 60 feet, then 120 feet, and so on, depending on what the illusion is. So 3D films require us to focus at one distance and converge at another. And 600 million years of evolution has never presented this problem before. All living things with eyes have always focussed and converged at the same point.”

There you have it, don’t spend your hard-earned money for 3D when not only does it not add anything to the experience, but it actually makes it worse!  You’re welcome!
